Calling or texting a hotline can be scary, here are some examples of questions you may be asked. Click on the conversation bubbles below to get more information about each question.

“Thanks for reaching out.”

Hotline calls are confidential and anonymous.  Advocates are specially trained in intimate partner violence (IPV) matters. Advocates can discuss the options available to you and might thank you for taking this important step.

“How are you taking care of yourself?”

Self-care is important at any stage of a relationship. It is easy to forget about keeping yourself healthy and happy. The advocate may talk to you about ways you can care for yourself.

“Is there anything else I can help you with? Remember you can always call us back.”

Advocates are always available to answer your questions and how to handle an unhealthy or abusive relationship, so don’t hesitate to reach out more than once.  People often call or text the hotline as new questions or concerns arise.

“Are you in a safe place to chat?”

Advocates ask this question because your safety is the top priority. It’s important to remember to delete the hotline number from your phone and clear your internet browser history after chatting with an advocate.

"Why don't you tell me a little bit about your situation?"

This gives you a chance to describe the concerns you have about your relationship. You could explain a recent conflict or describe a timeline of the relationship. This can help the advocate understand what’s happening.

“What have you considered doing at this point?”

You are the expert of your own situation. You may be feeling ready to leave or just trying to understand what’s happening. The advocate can help you regardless of the reason you’re calling.

“Let’s brainstorm together.”

Regardless of the reason you are calling or texting today, the advocate can help you decide on next steps or to create a personal safety plan.
